Vroom Solar Announced Today to Offer a New Type of DIY Turnkey On-Demand Solar Power Array for Off Grid Homes

The On-Demand Solar Generator Can Be Installed by a Novice in Two Hours on Vehicles, Trailers, Work Trucks, Cargo Vans, Shipping Containers, Railroad Cars and Even Off Grid Tiny Houses, Shed Homes, and Farm Outbuildings

Vroom Solar Announced Today to Offer a New Type of DIY Turnkey On-Demand Solar Power Array for Off Grid Homesteads

Springfield, MO (January 23, 2023) – VroomSolar.com rolled out plans for a new type of Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Solar Power Generator that requires no batteries, no solar installation experience, and no planning for load balancing requirements. The turnkey DIY Solar Installation kit includes everything you need including a racking system, a combiner box, load management controllers that automatically route power to a prioritized list of AC outlets to ensure that critical systems are charging if the sun is shining and gives you your choice of preferred storage.

DIY Mobile, Portable Solar Generators

The DIY Turnkey Solar Charging Arrays are the perfect solution for any business that runs a mobile site/location that requires electricity to run motors and/or charge battery-powered tools and electric vehicles (EV), such as riding lawn mowers, tractors, EV UTVs and motorcycles, golf carts and even EV work trucks.

Solar Charging for Battery Packs for Construction Tools

“We work with a lot of companies that have very unique electric power requirements that move from one job site to the next on an hourly, daily or monthly basis,” said Luke Phelps, Vroom Solar’s CEO/president. “For example, there are a long list of construction, plumbing and HVAC companies that depend on power tools that run off battery packs that need to be charged on a continual basis. Our DIY solar systems make it easy for any novice to install a solar power array in tandem with a power management system that can provide enough electricity to power from four to six AC power outlets that can keep up to 12 battery chargers continuously charging battery packs at the same time whenever the vehicle is parked in direct sunlight. The same is true for EV charging systems.”

On Grid Utility Electricity vs Off Grid Solar Electricity

“Very similar to mobile construction customers, there are millions of families that are fleeing the big cities and buying 10 to 100 acres of rural land in order to build Off Grid Homesteads,” added James Bartley, Vroom Solar’s Chief Technology Officer. “And when these Off Gridders contact the local utility company and ask for a quote to run several miles of new electricity lines and utility poles to their remote location they are stunned when they learn it might cost an average of $10,000 per quarter mile and that running new 5 miles of new lines might cost them well over $200,000. For Off Grid families our DIY Solar Power Generators are a no brainer.”

What Happens When the Utility Companies Shut Down the Power Grid?

“Why pay $200,000 for something that the utility companies can turn off with the flip of a switch like they did in Northern California during the wildfire season, or in Texas when a polar vortex took down the whole grid for weeks at a time,” Phelps quickly interjected, “Many grid-tied solar customers were shocked to learn that their solar power arrays would not work when the utility’s electric grid went down. That is why our 100% off grid solar power generators are going to sell like hot cakes. Our system can be put together and generating power in less than 2 hours by a complete novice that knows absolutely nothing about installing solar systems and with no worries the batteries are going fail on you without proper maintenance.”

Where Can You Buy a Vroom Solar Power Generator?

Vroom Solar is currently setting up sales and distribution agreements for our DIY portable solar power generators through independent sales reps/OEM manufacturer reps; local retailers in each state such as vendors that sell sheds, tiny homes, steel buildings, and metal garage ports, local feed stores that serve farms and ranches; large retail outlets such as Tractor Supply Co., Southern States, Orscheln Farm & Home, Rural King, Cabela’s, Bass Pro Shops and others; resellers that specialize in selling into the Home Builders Association of America vendors in the construction; HVAC and plumbing industries; and national and international distributors that sell products and services on a regional, national or worldwide basis, as well as OEM manufacturer representatives that sell solar products and service into national big box retailers, such as Walmart, Costco, Home Depot, Lowes.

Public Sales will begin on Q4 2023 following the conclusion of the company’s equity crowdfunding campaign on StartEngine at => https://www.startengine.com/offering/vroomsolar

“These are just a few of the topline industry segments that can sell their products and services into our Off Grid Homestead, Farms and Ranches target audience,” said Robert Hoskins, Editor-in-Chief at Living-Off-Grid.com magazine.

“Smart Americans are flocking to the “Off Grid Living” and “Prepping Groups” in order to learn how to:

  1. Grow gardens and raise chickens, rabbits and goats for food.
  2. Install off grid solar systems that will be generating free solar electricity when the government turns off the electrical grid like the have done in Northern California during wildfires and Colorado using smart meters to control homeowners thermostats.”
  3. Install rainwater harvesting systems that capture and provide clean, purified drinking water.

Americans Fleeing Big Cities to Build Off Grid Homesteads
“Americans are scared of their government, which seeks only to enforce unbelievable laws like having to buy electric cars, forcing untested vaccines, drinking poisoned city water, outlawing front-yard, victory gardens, opening our borders to dangerous illegal aliens and schools that are teaching children its ok to get a sex change in kindergarten.”

“It is no wonder that Americans are fleeing big population centers. They can see the government purposely destroying supply chains by requiring dangerous vaccines for healthcare workers and Biden purposely declaring war on the oil & gas industry in order to cause inflation and drive prices through the roof so that Americans have no choice but to depend on the government for stimulus handouts, medical care, food and water.”

Off Grid Homesteads are Self Sufficient and Don’t Need Government Handouts

A good example to analyze is how people living off grid in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina fared after Hurricane Ian leveled homes, downed electrical grids and closed grocery stores.

People that lived in the cities were helpless and couldn’t provide for themselves, and were dependent on the local government for food, water and shelter.

“However, people who were living off the grid and preppers that store up emergency supplies weren’t phased one bit,” Hoskins added. “The day after Hurricane Ian Off Gridders lights were the only ones on, their refrigerators were still keeping food cold, ice makers were still making ice, rainwater harvesting systems were full of clean water and root cellars and pantries were stocked with enough food to last 12 months or more.”

Living Off Grid.com Magazine and Blog Enjoy Significant Growth

“That is why over the past 4 years, our Living-Off-Grid.com magazine and our Facebook Living Off Grid: Prepping to Live Off the Grid Discussion Groups have grown by sometimes as many as 3,000 new members per day. Smart, intelligent Americans are searching for a free sources of information on how to buy some rural land, build an Off Grid Homestead and teaching their families how to live off the land just like pioneers did in the 1800’s,” Hoskins summarized.

Living-Off-Grid.com Magazine Announces New $1 Subscription to the “Guide to Off Grid Living” for Families that Want Learn How to Sell Their Homes in the City and Move Out to the Country to Build an Off Grid Homestead

The Guide to Off Grid Living

The “Guide to Off Grid Living” provides over 80 Training Guides that Provide Educational Information

The “Guide to Off Grid Living” provides over 80 Individual Training Guides that Provide Educational Information Such as How to Find Off Grid Properties for Sale; How to Build an Off Grid Shelter; How to Drill a Water Well; How to Install Solar Power for Electricity; How to Plant a Vegetable/Medicinal Garden for Food; and, How to Build a Predator Proof Chicken Coop to Raise Chickens, Etc., Etc.

June 28, 2022 (Flagstaff, Arizona) – Living-Off-Grid.com Magazine, after three years of tremendous growth due to the U.S. Government’s continued efforts to strip Americans of their civil and constitutional rights, had to figure out a better and easier way to answer the millions of questions that American citizens are asking about “How could  they buy some rural land and build an Off Grid Homestead for their family?”

Due to the large pent-up demand from families seeking this knowledge, Living-Off-Grid.com Magazine decided to publish over 80 “Guides to Off Grid Living,” which can be downloaded at => https://livingoffgrid.home.blog/guide-to-off-grid-living/.

The guides are written for millions of customers, who have decided they want to learn what it takes to move to the mountains, the foothills and/or the deserts on a worldwide basis with a well-researched plan to build an Off Grid Homestead where their families will not be dependent on utility companies for power, water or gas; where they will not be dependent on grocery stores for food/drinks and not dependent on pharmacies for medicine nor local, state and federal government agencies, which are becoming more and more hostile toward American citizens that want to live out the American dream.

In less than three years, Living-Off-Grid.com magazine website has grown from zero to more than 200,000+ readers per year as more and more families are searching for the best source of information on everything they need to learn to begin living off the land.

“All you have do is watch the local evening TV newscasts to see precisely what is driving normal Americans away from the big Democrat-controlled cities,” said Robert Hoskins, Editor-in-Chief, Living-Off-Grid.com magazine. “Many career politicians are trying as hard as possible to destroy the American dream, the American family, American values and the American way of life.”

Hoskins continued, “Nobody wants to be forced to get a vaccination that doesn’t work, doesn’t stop a virus from spreading and thus far has killed thousands of people who trusted the government’s lies about safety and the efficacy of the vaccine.

God-following Americans don’t want their kindergarten through 3rd children indoctrinated by teachers that are trying to convince their kids that they should get a sex change by transgender teachers or that pedophilia is a normal sexual orientation.

They also do not want to their U.S. constitutional rights to be violated or completely revoked, nor do they want to sit by and idly watch the U.S. government transform from a democratic republic into a socialist communist government that seems to be following the same game plan that Hitler used to establish his Nazi regime in Germany that caused two global wars.

As a result of all this turmoil, many smart Americans are researching and making plans to circumvent the lifestyle of living in the city by actively learning how to:

  1. How to Shop for Rural Properties Where Their Family Can Build an Off Grid Homestead that is much safer than living suburban America.
  2. How to build an Off Grid home that will keep their families comfortable.
  3. How to drill a well or set up a rainwater harvesting system for freshwater.
  4. How to heat water for hot showers / baths using solar, wood and/or propane.
  5. How to install solar panels and wind turbines to produce electricity.
  6. How to plant/grow a “Victory” garden for vegetables and medicinal herbs.
  7. How to raise chickens, rabbits, pigs and goats/cows for meat and milk.
  8. How to setup a compostable toilet for environmentally friendly septic system.
  9. How to setup a high-speed internet connection via cell towers/LEO satellites.
  10. 10. How to install security systems to surveil against apex predators and invaders.

So far, the “Guide to Off Grid Living” has been downloaded over 19,000+ times by prospective homesteaders who are thirsty for knowledge, tips, tricks and how-to articles that will help them adopt a new living off the grid lifestyle. Over 80+ free learning guides can be downloaded at:

Guide to Off Grid Living - Bluetti EB70S Power Station and Solar Panels with Brand Showing

Bluetti Portable Solar Generator – The Perfect Solar Solution for Beginners that Want to Learn about Solar with an Affordable Starting Price Tag

Bluetti EB70S Power Station

If you’re tired of sitting in the dark at night, we highly recommend buying a BLUETTI EB70S Portable Power Station | 800W 716Wh in tandem with the Bluetti PV200 4-Panel Folding Solar Panels. The power station comes in several colors, we liked the charcoal grey the best. They are very easy to setup and require no knowledge of solar. Just plug everything together, put the solar panels in the sunshine and presto you have electricity.

Once we placed the order the company shipped the unit and it took around 2 weeks to arrive. It came in two packages, one for the EB70S Portable Power Station and one for the foldable 200-watt solar panels. The packaging was very sturdy. There was an outside box. And the power station was inside another box, which means that regardless of where you live the Bluetti products will show up in pristine condition.

Easy-to-Use

The best news is that you don’t know how to know anything about solar to install or use the free solar electricity it produces. It comes with a short brochure that tells you what every feature is, what its function is as well as how to connect everything together. The whole system in plug-and-play and is super easy to setup up. As the sun travels across the sky from east to the west, you may need to adjust the solar panels to keep them perpendicular to the sun for maximum power production. Always keep the panels pointed directly at the sun when possible. Also note that in the winter, the sun sinks low in the southern sky. Tilting the solar panels up a little bit so that they remain at a 90 degree (perpendicular) to the sun’s rays. You’ll also know that the solar panels are working when they get hot as they begin to produce solar energy.

You will know when to move the solar panels by keeping a close eye on power production. If it power production falls a little bit, check the shadow and readjust the solar panels as necessary. In full sun, our panels produce around 194 watts out of the 200 watts of rated power. Overtime you will learn exactly how much solar UV rays you can expect to capture during the different thicknesses of clouds.

It is always best to keep the EB70S solar power station and solar panels dry and out of the rain. You can store the Bluetti Power Station inside a tent with ePort or in a large waterproof box. The solar panels MC4 connectors are designed with an o-ring to be water resistant, but they are not waterproof. Electricity and puddles of water might cause someone to get accidentally electrocuted.

Easy-to-Setup the Solar Panels & Plug into the EB70S Power Station

It takes about 5 minutes to setup every morning. We found that putting stick in the ground in front of the solar panels, but not throwing any shade on them, will help you place the solar panels perfectly based on the shadow of the stick. Setup the solar panels perpendicular (90-degree angle) to the shadow of the stick.

First, you’ll need to determine which way is south and where the panels will receive full sunlight and zero shade. On the backside of the panels are fold out supports that can be setup at different angles. To start out we chose 45 degrees. Next you fold out the four panels and tilt them back until the fold out legs rest on the earth.

The panels have a cool zip up pouch that allows you to roll up the wiring and keep it tucked away while stored at night. In the morning, unzip the pouch pull out the wiring. Next, there is only one step needed to plug in the solar panels into the Bluetti Portable Power Station/Solar Generator. With both wiring harnesses snapped together there are about 14-ft. of cabling that go from the solar panels to the portable solar power station batteries.

Easy-to-Read Display LCD Panel

Once the panel wiring cables are connected to the Bluetti power station charging cable and the solar panels are folded out and facing south directly to the sun, you can then plug the charging cable into the Input/MPPT 12-28V200-Watt Max charging port.

Instantly you’ll see the LCD display unit light up in blue. As long as you keep in the shade of a tent or the solar panels, the display if very easy-to-read. The display panel shows you how many watts of power are going into the batteries as well as how many watts are being used by everything that is plugged in. You can run in regular or economy mode, which automatically shuts the Power Station down when not in use, very similar to how a laptop or cell phone will power down and go to sleep.

There are two big numbers on the LCD display. The top number shows the input of how much solar power in being imported to charge the batteries of the EB70S power station. The bottom number shows the total of how much energy is being exported to the AC or DC outlets to charge all of the devices that are plugged into the Bluetti power station/solar generator.

The instructions say to keep the Bluetti Power station dry and out of the direct sunlight so we put the power station directly behind the panels in the shade of the panels when charging and when in the sunshine we put white hand towel over the top and sides making sure not to block the vent fans on each side of the power station. Always best to block direct sunshine from shining on the solar power station to keep it cool as possible so that it can generate maximum power possible. Placing the power station in the shade behind the solar panels and on top or inside of a ventilated rubber storage bin works very well.

Solar Power Generation and DC charging/AC Outlets
The front of to Bluetti Portable Power Station is organized into two well-thought-out grouping of wireless charging outlets delineated with white boxes.

One square is for charging DC appliances such as phones, tablets and laptops and has six charging options plus a cigarette lighter charging port. On top of the power station there is also a wireless 15v charger for anything that can be charged with a wireless charging. It also has a ton of different plugs that can be used to charge your gear.

DC Output Power Charging Options for Devices

  • Two PD3.0 100-watt plugs
  • Two 5V/3A USB plugs
  • Two 12V/10A plugs
  • One 12V Cigarette Lighter
  • One 15V Wireless Charging Pad for Cell Phones

The second square is for Powering AC appliances and has 4 plugs.

AC Output Power Plugs for AC Devices with Pure Sine Wave Inverter

  • Two AC 100-120V/800W max output for 2-Prong Plugs
  • Two AC 100-120V/800W max output for 3-Prong Plugs

Charging the Bluetti Portable Power Station/Solar Generator

The best way to charge the Bluetti is with the solar panels. But you can also charge it with your car, an AC outlet in a restaurant, bar or any fast food store that provides Wi-Fi, or by using a backup generator.

Charging with the solar panels is the fastest, free way to charge the Bluetti Power Station usually takes around 3 to 4 hours to reach 100% charge. Charging times depend on how many other things the power station is charging up or powering at the same time.

Power Input Options for Charging the Bluetti Portable Power Station

  1. Solar Power – The fastest way and most convenient way to charge up the Bluetti portable power station is with the solar panels, which can charge the power station in around 3 – 4 hours as long as the sun is out and there are no clouds.
  2. Home AC Power – If you have the option, you can charge the Bluetti Portable Power Station by plugging it in to your homes AC outlet the night before you go on a camping trip. It is slower and make take 5 hours or more because AC power has to be converted into DC power to charge the batteries.
  3. Vehicle DC Power – If you forget to charge the Power Station the night before you go on vacation you can also charge it using the vehicles 12v cigarette lighter, which is also very slow, but if you’re going to be driving for several hours why not charge it as long as you can so you start with 100% once you arrive at your off grid property or camping spot? Always remember to unplug the power station or it will drain your vehicle’s battery. Don’t worry if the battery dies. You can charge it back up as soon as the sun comes out.
  4. Backup Generator AC Power – If you have an off grid generator that generates AC power, you can also charge up the Power Station with a backup generator, but just like a home’s AC power it takes longer than the solar panels.

How We Tested the Bluetti Power Station

The first night, we plugged lower usage devices in one-by-one just to see how much each device used so we .  TV, laptop, a heating pad, a heating blanket (75-Watts) and one LED light which lights up our whole tent. When plugging things in one at a time, you can how much power each is using. The only one we weren’t sure of was the TV, but it only used 145-watts.

The first morning, after the solar panels were setup and the sun came up we ran a Mr. Coffee maker to brew a pot of coffee. It used 800-watts while percolating, but then only 200-watts to keep the pot warm. Once the coffee was done and we filled up our thermos, we then plugged in a portable countertop ice maker and made ice until our ice chest was full to the brim with ice, which takes a little while of all the things we liked about testing this setup was the ability to create Off Grid ice. Is very, very convenient not having to drive 50 miles roundtrip to a convenience store every three days to get more ice.

The Bluetti is a game changer when camping, but we see the real value in natural disasters such as hurricanes, tornadoes, or wildfires that destroy the local electricity power grid. Everybody that has refrigerator full of food that will go bad if the electricity is out for more than 1 to 2 days. As long as you have a big ice chest, a portable ice maker, a clean supply of water and a Bluetti portable solar generator, you can make lots of ice.

With a Magic Chef portable countertop ice maker (150-watts), a single batch of ice will take between 7 and 15 minutes to freeze the cubes and drop into the portable ice maker’s storage tank. On average, the countertop portable ice makers can produce up to 35 lbs. of ice every day, as well as store as much as 2 lbs. of ice inside the ice maker. Run this during the day, while the sun is generating maximum power. It won’t take very long to fill up your whole ice chest, when yours is full, you can sell the excess ice to neighbors for a couple of dollars per bag or give it away for free.

If you like cold beer and soft drinks or need to keep lots of food from spoiling while camping or during natural disasters, you should invest in a portable ice maker for sure.

You could easily recoup your investment in Bluetti’s portable solar generator and ice maker by selling ice to your neighbors at $5 a bag when emergency situations present themselves.

DeWalt 20V Battery Pack Powered Tools

We tested the Bluetti Solar Generator to see how well they would do at charge DeWalt batteries for power tools. We tested them with a 20v battery powered DeWalt drill, power impact driver, and a DeWatt heated jacket. We wanted to test a battery powered DeWalt circular saw, but we were unable to get anyone from DeWalt to call us back.

We did not have an actual project to build, so we could not give a real world example of how much solar power would be needed to build a shed, a chicken coop or any other structure. The good news is that regardless of how long it takes, the sun will provide energy to charge batteries day after day.  And at a maximum of 200-watts of solar power production you could theoretically charge 10 batteries at once. It took about 2 hours to charge one of the 20v batteries from DeWalt. We tested two battery chargers and three batteries, meaning you could be charging two batteries, while using one to do some work.

Kobalt 80V Battery Back Powered Lawn Tools
We also tested a Kobalt lawn mower, weed eater, hedge trimmer, and a leaf blower. We did not have an electric chainsaw, but wished we had one to test. The amount of power that can be generated by the 80-volt batteries is amazing. It takes a lot longer to charge them, but living off grid you have nothing but time. We really liked being able to pull up to a dispersed camping spot and use the weed eater to carve a perimeter fence line, then used the lawn mower to mow a large 1/4 acre spot. The leaf blower seemed unnecessary, but after collecting firewood and pine needles that were damp, the fire would only smoke and we had a hard time getting lit. However turn on a leaf blower on and blow air into the small amount of coals you have, presto you’ll have a bonfire. It works better than gasoline or lighter fluid and safer too.

How Long Will It Last

The main question most people want to know is what can it charge, how long will it take to charge certain devices like cell phones and laptops and how long does it take for the Bluetti Power Station to recharge

  • AC Rated Power – 800-watt with capacity for 1400-watt surge capacity
  • Power Inverter – 800-watt pure sine wave inverter
  • Battery Rate Capacity – 716-Watt Hours, 2,500 Charge Life Cycles.
  • Battery Type – Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFe-PO4) – long lasting and very safe to use

Net Weight21 lbs for the portable power station and 19 lbs for the fold up solar panels. Very easy to carry by children, women and men.

Dimensions
12.6 x 8.5 x 8.7 inches

Common Loads

  • Smart Phone 10-watts – Around 50-60 Charges

Cons/Draw Backs

We didn’t find one single drawback except maybe the EB70S is too small for an Off Grid Living Homestead, but for camping, van life, or natural disaster situations it is the perfect solution. Nothing will give you more confidence than knowing you have a solar generator stored in the closet that doesn’t need any fuel to run, only sunshine. Trust once you see what to solar can do, you’ll definitely want more. The Bluetti Portable Power Station/Solar Generators are the cheapest way to get started with solar. And they are modular, so that you can add more and more solar panels and batteries as your budget allows.

Pros/Advantages

The main advantage of ordering and using a Bluetti Portable Power Station is that everything is prewired and plug and play. This is the perfect solution for learning about solar power. And the good news it that Bluetti Power Stations are highly scalable. Regardless of what your starting budget is, you can alway buy more stack the Power Stations together to increase the watt hours of battery storage as well as increase the surge wattage capacity. They do this so that people can increase the power to sufficiently run a very large household on solar power and batteries.

A Timeline and Game Plan for Building an Off Grid Shed, Rustic Cabin or a Regular Off Grid Home

Timeline for Finding and Buying Rural Land and then the Step-by-Step Prioritized Process of Building an Off Grid Homestead

  1. Start searching for “Off Grid Raw Land for Sale,” “Rural Property for Sale,” or “Off Grid Farms/Ranches for Sale” in your desired state. Once you narrow it down to a state, then start reviewing the county level building codes and try to avoid buying land with an HOA or POA. Not sure what state? Search through our State-By-State Buyers Guide for Off Grid.
  2. You Can also Contact the County’s Tax Assessor and see what land parcels are in currently in foreclosure or that owe back taxes. Sometimes you can simply buy the land by just paying off all of the back taxes owed. This is exactly what land flippers do.
  3. Google search things to look for” and “things to avoid when evaluating and buying land. There are lots of list that you read to learn good strategies for buying land.
  4. Beware of Owner Financing and be especially careful when doing deals through First United Realty, which is famous for working with Homeowners Associations (HOAs) and Property Owners Associations (POAs) to write up absent landowners for breaking the CCR’s and then fine the property owners so much that they prefer to walk away from the property than pay the fines, which is what they want. They then resell it for another 20% down deposit and wait for the landowners to miss one payment. It is an unethical business practice, but 100% legal.
  5. Download a 7.5 minute topographic map from the US forms service where the property is located. Note where hills, valleys, creeks, seeps and flood plains are located. Pick an elevated spot to put a shed, cabin or home.
  6. Consider drilling a well near seeps, springs and creeks. Water is one of the first projects that needs to be completed. Everything on an off grid property will need water to live and to grow including a garden and livestock.
  7. Also plot a pathway for a driveway that won’t wash out with heavy rain. Keep the road level and straight as possible so that big trucks can carry big and bulky items such as fiberglass swimming pools, shipping containers, or 10,000 gallon rainwater cisterns can be delivered to where you want them with little effort. Plan a loop so drivers can drive in, dump their load and drive out without having to turn around.
  8. If the property has trees, consider selling a portion of the timber and letting them come log an acre or two so that you can earn cash to pay for building a house. Consider where the sun will be shining during the summer and winter. Sun can be used for passive heating in the winter as well as generating solar electricity during the day.
  9. If the property has stones, rocks and boulders. Consider crushing the rocks into gravel that can be used to build and pave a driveway. Big boulders can be sold to landscape companies or used to anchor the corners for barbed wire fences and for landscaping. Rocks can also be placed around trees to help collect water as dew will condense on them trickle water down to growing trees root systems.
  10. Regardless of how big the property, consider fencing in 1 to 2 acres that will be big enough for a garden, and paddocks for livestock and free range chickens. Then build a big, strong and tall fence this is bull-strong, pig-tight and horse-high that will deter wildlife from eating your garden and pets. Always plan ahead when building. You may not plan on having horses, cows, goats or other livestock, but having paddocks or fenced in fields full of green grass and hay can always be bartered with for food, labor or money. If you live in bear country, you might also add an electric fence to the top of the fences to keep bears out.
  11. Also down the fence lines, plant shelterbelts with short, medium and tall plants and trees such as berry bushes, small fruit trees, and large bushes and trees that bear nuts, berries, apples, etc. Not only will these resources provide your family with food to eat and barter with, but will also attract a wide variety of food for birds and big game animals that will provide great viewing wildlife opportunities from the living room and dining room table. Having a wildlife buffet surrounding your house will also keep the wildlife at a good distance from your house. Provide bears with a food buffet a good distance from your home and there will be no need to breakdown your front door, garage door, outbuilding doors or barn doors looking for food that they can smell.
  12. If you’re a hunter, consider building fences that will fold down or gates that can be opened during hunting season in key locations near the garden. Position tree stands on all 4 sides of the garden so that no matter which way the wind is blowing, you will be located downwind.  You can also plant food plots to draw in deer, elk and other big game animals
  13. Consider putting in solar lights along the perimeter of your fence. Solar lights that shine all night are great for attracting bugs and the spiders, scorpions and other stinging pests that eat them. You will know that you are succeeding if you see spider webs in the trees near the lights. Anything that drops fruit on the ground will attract wildlife, varmints and bugs. Use night time lights to pull bugs away from your home.
  14. For security you can install motion censored, 1,000 lumen lights on all four sides of your home. Whether you are home or not, these lights will come on and make intruders think that the lights on are and you are looking out the window with a locked and loaded shotgun. Motion-sensored security cameras are also great
  15. Consider arriving to your off grid property just as winter is ending and spring is quickly approaching. Plant a garden and all of your fruit bearing bushes and trees as soon as you have a way to irrigate them with as little effort as possible. Locate your rainwater harvesting systems, rain barrels and cisterns at the top of hills so that you will always have lots of water pressure. Engineer your water lines so they they can be drained prior to hard freezes, including the cabin’s water lines. Nothing is worse that having all your water pipes burst because you didn’t plan on severe winter weather.
  16. Next build chicken coops, rabbit hutches, bee hives, barns, animal sheds and a wood shed for drying and aging firewood whether you need them or not. A flock of 5 chickens per person and several pairs of breeding rabbits is a good way to ensure that your family never starves. Rabbits breed fast for meat. And chickens will provide eggs and half the ingredients need to make bread. As your garden begins to grow you and start to harvest the veggies, you feed your family with veggies and feed all of the waste greens and imperfect or spoiled veggies to the chickens and hogs. Sunflowers and grains can be stored for feeding animals during the winter.
  17. For temporary shelter, consider large wall tents, yurts, sheds, shipping container homes and even large Indian tipis. The cool thing about living in temporary shelters is that it will allow you to see the land for a while and then pick the perfect place for a long-term house that may take a year or more to build. Don’t like the first spot you pick, you can also move a temporary shelter to a more permanent location.
  18. Before you start building, install the largest solar power array that you can afford. Shoot for a 5-kW to 10-kW solar power array. If you need to scrimp on money, plan on adding more and more batteries later and add they as you go. A large solar power array will allow you to run all of your appliances and battery chargers for tools and electronics during the day. The only thing you really need to run at night is a refrigerator, a freezer and a heating blanket or AC unit.
  19. With water flowing, gardens blooming and shelterbelts blooming, bees pollinating and livestock breeding, it is time to build a good enoughdd rain/snow proof structure that will get you through a winter, which means a framed house with at least one wood stove.
  20. Once a house is framed, tar papered and roofed, you can spend bad weather days inside building mudrooms, bathrooms, kitchens, living rooms and bedrooms. Consider building one medium-sized room in the middle of the house. Building a central room will make easy to heat and cool a place where the family can sleep and relax after a hard days work. The outer rooms will serve as buffer against harsh hot and cold weather. Also keep water, showers and kitchen sinks in the center of the house to shield from freezing temperatures versus location water sources on an outside wall. Build all outside walls with 2×6 studs and the best insulation you can afford, especially on the north and west walls in the USA.
  21. You can use good weather days in the winter to build insulated, hardened walls on the outside perimeter of the building shell with tar paper, insulation and then wood, brick, vinyl, aluminum, corrugated metal or stone to keep the bad weather outside.
  22. Plumb all of your gray water to directed gardens and the black water to a septic tank. Or, to a black water waste soldier fly bin that will use maggots that will eat everything from animal carcasses to cow, horse and human manure. When the maggots mature, they will self-harvest by crawling out of the muck and into buckets, which can then be used as feed for chickens, hogs, fish, and even pet reptiles.
  23. Also during the winter, you can start planning a bigger and better garden. You can build greenhouse or cold frame window box for growing wintertime crops, even when there is snow on the ground. The sun will keep the lettuce, cabbage, root vegetables and other brassicas growing even when it freezing outside. Remember I do live in Texas so this may not work up North where there is 4 ft of snow on the ground and negative 30 degrees outside. But you could always build a Walipini or underground cold frame greenhouse that is heated with a steaming pile of decaying compost.
  24. Consider ordering a Starlink satellite dish for high-speed broadband wireless internet access.
  25. Use cold winter nights to plan and bring new workers to the homestead in 9 months.
  26. Make a list of things you won’t get too for another 5 to 10 years, but will be fun to dream about building over a hot cup of coffee or a cold beer.
